A camshaft is a machine element in form of a rod (= "the shaft"), which is mounted on the at least one rounded projection (= "to the cam"). The shaft rotates on its axis, by the person or attached to their cam this rotational movement is converted repeatedly in a short longitudinal movement. In standard design the cam contours parallel to the camshaft, but also "tapered cam" has been realized. The camshaft is used in cam switches and controls, but mainly in reciprocating engines (internal combustion engine), where it is part of the valve train, it is used to open the intake and exhaust valve timing on the design moderating. In older injection pumps camshafts are also used for fuel metering to the individual suction tubes or cylinders.
