The starter generates the intake and compression stroke which is used to start the engine. Today's automotive starters are usually operated with a ignition lock. Upon ignition of a motor vehicle, usually by turning the ignition key, a solenoid is energized, which pushes in the teeth of the pinion and the flywheel magnet switches on the electric motor by a contact. A slightly oblique attachment facilitates the meshing of the pinion. The engine is then accelerated until it can continue to run without support. A freewheel prevents that the engine drives the electric motor to a high speed and damages it. Once the start was successful the power to the magnetic switch is interrupted and the pinion is pushed out.
