Vehicle engine starting unit and the alternator

The engine starting unit of a vehicle, also known as the starting motor as well as the alternator, together they ensure that a parked vehicle can get started again.

The car’s starting motor: Its functioning and interaction with the alternator

The starter motor is a so called auxiliary power unit and as its name says, it is for staring the engine. The automobile industry uses so called push-screw drive starter motors in production. These modern starter motors have a starter sprocket: Gears which can be moved axially on their shafts. When the engine is to be started, the starter motor gets activated, by turning the ignition key or by pushing the start-button, then two solenoid switches of different voltage are loaded with power. These are then pushing the sprocket inside the starter motor and put a pressure spring under tension. The sprocket then gets pushed via a leverage system and fed into the teeth of the flywheel.

When the components of the starter motor have received their final position the motor contact will be closed by the solenoid switch and the engine will get turned. The running engine drives the alternator via a fan belt. As an auxiliary device, the alternator supplies electricity to all electrically operated parts of the car. In addition, the alternator permanently charges the battery during vehicle operation in order to secure the necessary electric energy for the next engine start.
