The brake disc is a circular (disc brake), which is bolted to the wheel hub. If the brake pads press onto the rotor, the forward motion of a vehicle is delayed. The harder the brake disc, the less it wear. Because of the high thermal loading of the brake disc, it is necessary that a continuous cooling is guaranteed which is usually achieved by the air stream. This is of tremendous importance because in overheating of the brake, the braking effect is reduced. Brake discs are cast in most cases of steel alloys. The material must be particularly resistant to heat. During the manufacturing usually cast steel, cast iron and ceramic is used. Through the use of the carbon the brake discs get lighter. The advantage of the costly ceramic discs is that its braking action is constant in warm and cold state.
